As was the case when it was founded almost 170 years ago, ETH Zurich is still at the service of society today. But what does this mean for a university with 25,000 students and more than 500 professors in 2024? Anyone in charge of ETH today has to navigate the university through challenging times: Budget and student growth are diverging, Switzerland's relationship with Europe remains difficult and technologies such as AI are changing society as a whole. In this context, how can ETH best fulfill its mission in teaching, research and knowledge transfer? How can it remain attractive in the global competition for bright minds and maintain a constructive dialog with politics and society? ETH President Joël Mesot, who has been in office since 2019, will discuss the biggest challenges for the further development of the university, but will also mention the opportunities that ETH offers as one of the world's best technical universities.
