Innovation: Competitive advantages through collaboration between research and industry

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland and conducts cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy, and environment, as well as human beings and health. Through basic and applied research, PSI works on sustainable solutions for central questions from society, economy, and science. PSI also aims to make new research findings available to the industry. This is intended to strengthen the competitiveness and innovative power of Swiss SMEs and industrial companies. PSI supports industrial research and development (R&D) as well as product and process development, for example, through joint research projects or through access to PSI's large-scale research facilities.
Switzerland Innovation, the Swiss Innovation Park, creates a platform for national and international companies to advance their research and development activities together with Swiss universities and universities of applied sciences. Innovative companies are thus given the best possible conditions to focus on rapidly turning their innovations into marketable products and services. The Switzerland Innovation network consists of five innovation parks in all regions of Switzerland.
The Switzerland Innovation Park Innovaare is the innovation park in the immediate vicinity of the Paul Scherrer Institute. It offers a thriving innovation ecosystem for high-tech companies of all sizes and for industrial research and development centers. The Innovaare Park facilitates access for high-tech companies and start-ups to the world-class research infrastructures of the Paul Scherrer Institute and the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, provides support for business development, and connects its member companies to a network of science and technology experts, industry leaders, and representatives from the financial world. As part of the national network Switzerland Innovation, the park Innovare brings companies into the national and international business world.

Prof. Dr. Christian Rüegg, is director of the Paul Scherrer Institute and professor of physics at ETH Zurich (ETHZ) and EPF Lausanne (EPFL), professor at the University of Geneva and honorary professor at University College London. Rüegg is a solid-state physicist working on quantum phenomena in magnetism. He has received prestigious science awards for his work, including the Lewy-Bertaut Prize and the Nicholas Kurti Science Prize for Europe, as well as an ERC Grant. He has been instrumental in the use and further development of instrumentation at the Swiss neutron source SINQ and at the European sources ILL and ESS, and represents the research field in numerous international bodies. |

John Millard, is "Head of Technology Transfer" at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland's largest research institute for natural sciences and engineering. He has held positions at British Petroleum in France and ABB in Switzerland, and was CEO of ERPAG and later McKinnon & Clarke AG, an energy consulting firm based in Tessin. He was also involved in founding and building two successful high-tech start-ups. John originally studied chemical engineering and obtained his MBA from the London Business School in 1999. |

Raymond Cron, has been Managing Director of Switzerland Innovation since 2015. He also serves on the boards of various Swiss companies and institutions. Previously, he held senior positions in the Swiss construction and real estate industry. From 2004 to 2008, he was director of the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA). Raymond Cron holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from ETH Zurich. He completed his postgraduate studies in business administration and management at the Center of Business Administration BWI of the ETH Zurich. |

Dr. Benno Rechsteiner, is CEO of Switzerland Innovation Park Innovaare. In 2019, financing and the start of construction of the new innovation campus next to the Paul Scherrer Institute could be secured. With its 23'000 m2 of high-tech rental space, the Innovaare Park will be the appropriate location to develop know-how into marketable, innovative solutions, and to strengthen Switzerland as one of the most innovative countries. From 2008 - 2017, he worked in the high-tech company Rolic as Head of Marketing and Sales and Head Business Unit, positioning the company as a globally recognized leader in Photo Alignment. He holds a Master in General Chemistry and a PhD in Physical Chemistry. |

Dr. Florian Döring, is CEO and Founder of the high-tech startup XRnanotech. He received his PhD in Materials Physics from the University of Göttingen and subsequently completed an MBA. As a scholarship holder of the Foundation of the German Economy, he was interested in management and entrepreneurship at an early stage and has now founded the startup XRnanotech after his PostDoc at the Paul Scherrer Institute. With this company he has already won several prestigious awards and wants to become the world market leader in the field of nanostructured optics in the future. With these high-tech products, he wants to enable his international customers to make the still invisible visible. |

Dr. Karen Huebscher, has been CEO of Solvias since spring 2014. Under her leadership Solvias is underpinning its focus on customer needs, its commitment to technological and know-how leadership, and a drive towards further international expansion. Prior to serving as CEO, Karen was a non-executive Board member of Solvias AG from 2013 to 2014. She spent more than 15 years with Novartis in senior leadership positions. Karen is a member of the Board of Directors of the Tecan Group. She holds a PhD from the Swiss Institute of Technology in Zurich and an MBA from the IMD in Lausanne. |
